Commission to hold public hearing on coastal management

Home to millions of European citizens, Europe's coasts are a major source of raw materials and food. They host rich but fragile biodiversity. At the same time they offer significant opportunities for economic development and leisure. But these areas are facing serious problems of habitat destruction, water contamination, coastal erosion and resource depletion, which will be aggravated by climate change. The European Commission is holding a public hearing on 30 May 2011 to discuss options for future EU action to ensure sustainable development along Europe's shores, a process known as Integrated Coastal Zone Management. Those wishing to attend the hearing, which takes place at the Committee of the Regions, Bâtiment Jacques Delors, Rue Belliard, Brussels, are invited to register on-line by 13 May. Interpretation will be provided in French, German, English, Italian, Spanish and Polish. The hearing complements an on-line public consultation on Integrated Coastal Zone Management and Maritime Spatial Planning (see IP/11/353) which runs until 20 May 2011.
